Moscow City Ballet UK Season 2008-2009

Biography

Moscow City Ballet was formed in 1988 by the distinguished Russian Choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov.  A highly acclaimed ex soloist of the Bolshoi Ballet, Smirnov-Golovanov enjoys bringing his heritage of classical ballet in the Moscow style to audiences including young ballet-goers, all over the world.

The 21st century has brought fresh attention to classical ballet.   In France and Spain a wave of re-awakening to the classics is gathering force.   Much contemporary dance, often without storytelling and performed to recorded music, can be more of a gymnastic demonstration, whilst a performance of Russian classical ballet provides a true dancing experience combining artistry, technique, narrative, and live music, and is attracting a whole new generation of dance lovers. As regular visitors in the UK for almost twenty years, Moscow City Ballet, accompanied by the Moscow Ballet Orchestra has performed to the highest standard and audiences have enjoyed the unique style and artistic integrity of Victor Smirnov-Golovanov's own choreography, as well as original versions of the great classical Russian repertoire.

The Company has some of the most accomplished and artistic soloists, and a sublime corps de ballet, all trained in the in the best traditions of the Russian school. The costumes and sets are beautiful, colourful, and a feast for the eye when the curtain goes up.

Moscow City Ballet’s distinctive style endures both in production and rehearsal, due to the dedication of Victor Smirnov-Golovanov and his wife, Ludmila Nerubashenko, Chief Ballet Mistress and principal teacher.

Since 1989 Moscow City Ballet has become one of Russia's most successful and extensively touring ballet companies. They have visited Korea, Japan, Taiwan, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Israel, Cyprus and Greece. Annually, they play arenas in Poland with their magical Nutcracker, and enjoy great popularity in Moscow.

Repertoire: The company has the popular classical repertoire including a beautifully designed version of Romeo and Juliet produced by Victor Smirnov-Golovanov; an exhilarating traditional Russian version of Cinderella; a dramatic and evocative Giselle; a sparkling and enchanting Sleeping Beauty; an exquisitely designed and powerfully emotive Swan Lake; and a magical version of the Christmas favourite, The Nutcracker.
